The members of the Quartet met over ten years ago when studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. The first ever function was for a dinner in the Officers Mess in Maindy Army Barracks in Cardiff. This led to a flurry of similar work that was the catalyst for the formation of the group Formed in January 1980 with seventeen members, the Porthcawl choir has steadily grown to its current strength of forty-five members. It has been fortunate to be able to draw on the local talent of male voices to achieve the success it has. Porthcawl choirs objectives include maintaining the tradition of Welsh Choral Singing through practice, concert, competition, helping charitable causes and the promotion of Wales and Porthcawl

From an early age Joy has competed in and won many County, Urdd and National Eisteddfodau both in solo, folk solo and duet classes. Her most prestigious award being that she won the Violet Mary Roberts Scholarship at the 2006 and 2007 National Eisteddfod for the best soprano aged 19-25 years, also achieving runner-up in the Blue Ribband Competition.
